North West 'green business heroes' called on to compete for awards
Release date: 07 Mar 2010
Businesses in the North West which can demonstrate that their green measures have improved their profits have been called on to enter the Northwest Business Environment Awards.

The awards are hosted by the North West Regional Development Agency and environmental business support group ENWORKS, and are open to businesses of all sizes based in Cumbria, Lancashire, Greater Manchester or Merseyside.

The competition includes two specific categories for small firms:

The Best Environmental Practice Award recognises businesses that have made significant environmental improvements that have improved their finances
The Built Environment Award is for architects and developers that have included sustainability in their plans ¯ it includes a separate category for firms that have carried out a project for less than £1 million

Other categories include the Environmental Innovation Award, Combating Climate Change Award, Media and Communications Award, and the Environmental Leadership Award, where the entrants' business size will be taken into account by judges.

'For all the awards, the businesses must show that they have invested time or money into their measures and that they have had a positive effect on their finances,' said awards spokesman, Jake Smith.

'For the Best Environmental Practice Award the winner will have adopted a green strategy or policy for business reasons,' he added. 'It's not for a business that has just put in energy-efficient lightbulbs or offset their carbon footprint, but one that has invested in some energy-efficient equipment, adopted a green travel policy or changed the materials they use.'

Winner of the 2009 Built Environment award, architecture firm Cass Associates, was selected for its redesign of Liverpool Sailing Club, which focused on energy self-sufficiency.

'These awards are backed by major organisations including Business Link and the Environment Agency, and we have anecdotal evidence that previous winners have used their award's kudos to win public sector contracts,' said Smith. 'These days a firm that can prove they have a good environmental policy is more likely to win the contract over a firm that is charging the same price but is not carbon-friendly.'

The deadline for entries to the competition is 14 May 2010.
